Yu Yu Hakusho or probably know as Ghost Fighter, the trendsetting anime that solidified everyone’s love of tournament arcs, is coming back. Announced at Jump Festa 2018 and reported by Anime News Network, the series’ 25th anniversary Blu-Ray box set will include a brand new OVA. Below is the announcement of the new OVA. We don’t have any details about what the OVA will be (or how long it is) but seeing the return of the Yu Yu Hakusho crew will be a treat. Created by Yoshihiro Togashi, also known for Hunter X Hunter, Yu Yu Hakusho ran from 1992 to 199 with 112 epsiodes. The series follows the 14-year-old delinquent Yusuke Urameshi, who dies after saving a child in a car accident. The Spirit World is surprised by his death and offers him a chance to come back as a "spirit detective" who is tasked with defeating demons.
Along the way he teams up with the human punk Kuwabara, the extra as hell demon Hiei, and the smooth yet tortured Kurama. Often imitated but never replicated, Yu Yu Hakusho succeeded because not only did it feature kickin’ action but memorable characters. While the news of this new OVA is early we can only hope the original English voice cast will return. They did so well in their roles (especially for a dub in the early 2000’s) that it’d be a shame not to let them return.

Yusuke Urameshi is the main protagonist of the manga & anime series YuYu Hakusho. He is a Spirit Detective who is tasked with protecting Human World from various supernatural threats over the course of the series and his closest friends as well as greatest allies include Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei, Keiko, Genkai, Koenma and Botan. He is also the de facto leader of Team Urameshi and the general person to look to when the going gets tough. |
Yu Yu Hakusho was as known for its fashion sense as it was for its story and well animated fights. It is also one of the few anime series where the fandom is often evenly split between the original Japanese language release and the English dub. The fact it's returning in some form will definitely be a huge get for fans who have been fondly looking back on the series for years now. For those unfamiliar with Yu Yu Hakusho, the series was originally created by Yoshihiro Togashi and follows the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who loses his life when he is hit by a car trying to save a child's life. After passing a series of tests, Yusuke is allowed to return to the living world but with a few caveats. With the gained ability to see spirits and demons, Yusuke is given the title of "Underworld Detective" and must solve various cases of spirits running amok in the living world. The series ran in Shuiesha's Weekly Shonen Jump from December 1990 to July 1994. It has been collected into 19 volumes, and was licensed for an English language release by Viz Media from 2003 to 2010. It was adapted into an anime series by Fuji Television, Yomiko Advertising, and Studio Pierrot and aired from October 1992 to December 1994 for 112 episodes.
